*UPDATE* “HAPI Online has been up and working steadily for a week now so hopefully our technical issues have been resolved…” -the HAPI folks
*UPDATE* Not the HAPpIest of news.
“HAPI Online is still experiencing intermittent disruptions in access,” say the site’s tech folks. Stay tuned.
“HAPI Online has been experiencing recurring server errors over the past few weeks… .We are currently working on switching over to a new server… . We hope to have this in place by the end of this week. Our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.”
Stayed tuned for Happier news (I couldn’t resist).
No CommentsIOP Journal “Smart Materials and Structures”
Posted on August 13, 2009 @9:33 am by irobb
“… Smart Materials and Structures, published by non-profit scientific publisher IOP Publishing, UK, has announced that it has been named one of the most influential journals in the field of engineering in 2009, as recognised by ScienceWatch.com from Thomson Reuters.” –Knowledgespeak Newsletter 13 Aug 2009.
And The University of British Columbia Library has a subscription. Go to the IOP SM&S site (but you must come from on campus or via our VPN).
No CommentsSFX Pop-Up Menu: “Related” Full-Text Links
Posted on August 11, 2009 @1:10 pm by irobb
A clarification needs to be made about links claiming “Full text available” on the SFX pop-up menu. Links near the top of the menu (usually right under the journal or article title) try to connect you to THAT journal / article.
“Full text available” near the bottom (usually just below “Check the UBC Catalogue” or ” Order Documents from CISTI Order”) are for what SFX considers related journals, which most likely will NOT have what you want.
This is a known, confusing and frustrating issue we are trying to resolve.

“Online since 2003, IPA Source is the web’s largest library of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions and literal translations of opera arias and art song texts.”
“Ha, stolzer ozean!” Who said that? Find out at IPA Source.
(…psst, I think he was Dutch)
No CommentsSage Journals Online: Good-Bye CSA Illumina
Posted on July 29, 2009 @2:53 pm by irobb
*UPDATE* The date is back to January 1st. My head is spinning!
*UPDATE* The switch-over date is now September 1st not January 1st.
“To date, the SAGE Full-Text Collections have been available on both the ProQuest CSA Illumina platform and the SAGE Journals Online platform. After December 31, 2009, the SAGE Full-Text Collections will be available exclusively on SAGE Journals Online.” -Sage Library Newsletter, July 2009
For you, this means you’ll have to change any bookmarks you have for Sage titles on CSA Illumina. We will be updating our A-Z list and OpenURL linking.
No CommentsUBC Catalogue’s “Sort By” Box: It’s Broke
Posted on July 22, 2009 @3:16 pm by irobb
*UPDATE* Box fixed. Now you can sort your Library Catalogue search results. “Thank you,” to the Systems folks!
The title of this post basically sums it up: the “Sort By” drop-down box which appears with your search results in the UBC Library catalogue currently does nothing. We are working on the problem. Stay tuned.
RefWorks: Please Read the Update
Posted on July 22, 2009 @3:07 pm by irobb
The Library’s RefWorks crew has updated their information page. Please take a look. Remember to use the CORRECT URL for UBC patrons. Or as the Library’s RefWorks crew puts it:
“Do NOT create an account from the US refworks site.”
No CommentsGlobal NewsBank: Now Access World News
Posted on July 20, 2009 @12:01 pm by irobb

Access World News
With nearly 3,000 newspapers from around the world, Access World News (formerly Global NewsBank) really is your one-stop newsstand. So grab your morning cuppa and settle in with the Daily Monitor from Addis Ababa or maybe Orillia Today.
Note: from the NewsBank site, you also have the option of clicking on “World Newspaper Archive.” It’s a slow link to some historical, Latin American newspapers.

Based on Joseph Sabin’s landmark bibliography, this collection contains works about the Americas published throughout the world from 1500 to the early 1900’s.
Read more at our Sabin Americana info page. Then go in and have a look at “British Columbia and Vancouver’s island : a complete handbook” – 1858.
No CommentsMEDLINE Full Text (Ebsco): Not Linking
Posted on July 10, 2009 @11:31 am by irobb
*UPDATE* The links are now working for both the A-Z list and the eLink.
Feels almost like déjà vu all over again. MEDLINE with Full Text is displaying an error page when you try to link in from our A-Z list or via our button (previous problem was a blank page). The authorities have been contacted. Meanwhile, it’s not a total washout. When you land on the MEDLINE page, you can always click “Publications” (upper left) and browse/search your title there. Stay tuned
